The German Olympic team has its first Corona case on the evening of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Summer Games. As the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) announced on Friday (23.07.2021), the cyclist Simon Geschke tested positive for the virus.

The 35-year-old was initially positive in the daily antigen test, a subsequent PCR test verified the result. Geschke will miss the street race on Saturday (July 24th, 2021). It will also not be available as a replacement for the individual time trial (07/28/2021).

“I feel good physically, but emotionally it’s a very black day for me.”

“It is really hard to be taken out of the race so shortly before the competition. I followed all the hygiene rules to the best of my knowledge and belief,” said Geschke. In his Instagram story, he wrote that he was vaccinated and always behaved carefully. “I feel good physically, but emotionally it’s a very black day for me. Now all I can do is wish the guys a strong race.”

Buchmann’s start is still open

It is still open whether the German team will be able to start at least three of them. Geschke’s room colleague Emanuel Buchmann, who has always tested negative so far, has to undergo another PCR test in accordance with the regulations. If the result is negative, the Ravensburger can start. The other starters Nikias Arndt and Maximilian Schachmann, whose tests turned out negative, have been given the go-ahead for the 234-kilometer race. Schachmann traveled to the summer games with the clear goal of a medal, with Geschke he is missing an eminently important helper.

All other corona tests negative

The cyclists are accommodated a good 100 kilometers west of Tokyo in a suburb on Mount Fuji – a hotel outside the Olympic Village and also the cycling village. All of the other twelve athletes and supervisors of the road cycling team who are also staying at this hotel had tested negative as part of their antigen tests.

Since July 1, more than 100 foreign athletes and coaches have tested positive for the corona virus at the Summer Games in Tokyo. According to the rules, they are isolated in Japan. Because of the corona pandemic, strict rules of conduct apply to all Olympic participants.
