Corona capacity ICs three times greater than expected – Wel.nl

If a new wave of patients comes before ICs, they can handle it much better than previously thought. Due to other nursing methods, the average patient does not stay on the IC for 22 days, as in March / April, but only 8 days. This means that many more people can go to work.

“We are still conducting further research into it, but it looks like it”, says Diederik Gommers, chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care (NVIC) in the AD. “Of course we don’t know whether there will be a second wave and how big it will be,” he says, “but if it is comparable to the first, then we need to expand the ICs much less.”

“We would have liked to come out with that slowly”, Gommers tells the AD, “but we are still investigating exactly how that is.” In this way he wants to get a clear picture of whether the people who now end up on the ICs are comparable to those during the first wave. “It could be that in March and April more people ended up with underlying diseases and the patients of today are less ill.”
