“As Canadians, we take pride in our country’s natural beauty, but we often assume that plastic pollution of the marine environment is a problem seen elsewhere, and ignore that we ourselves are contributing to the problem,” said Mike Bascom, Senior Director of Marketing, Corona Canada. “Corona recognizes that change must start with our own production lines. Bringing cutting-edge changes to the market for our beer packaging is a concrete way to set an example for the industry.

In 2019 Corona Canada replaced all plastic packaging used for its cans on store shelves in Canada with new compostable cardboard packaging. This year, in partnership with GITEC (Global Center for Innovation and Technology), Corona continues its packaging commitments by launching revolutionary packaging for six-bottle beer packaging, becoming the world’s leading beverage brand. to use excess barley straw to create an innovative paper packaging solution. The process requires 90% less water in its pulp production than the traditional process using virgin wood, as well as less energy and abrasive chemicals. This fall, Corona will also make technological advances in packaging. It will become one of the first companies in the world to implement cutting-edge innovation related to cardboard packaging.
Corona has been protecting paradise for a long time, so that we continue to enjoy it. Since 2017, Corona has cleaned more than 1.6 million square meters of Canadian shoreline. This year, this figure should be revised upwards. For every package of specially identified Corona sold in Canada, one square meter of Canadian shoreline will be cleaned up, as part of efforts to clean up an additional two million square meters by the end of 2021.
Shoreline cleanup is more relevant than ever, as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the increase in the use of single-use plastics and pollution, which is helping to pollute our shores. The Corona and Ocean Wise partnership aims to clean up more of Canada’s shores through a timely collaboration marked by dedication and combined effort.
“This partnership with Corona Canada encourages Canadians to participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup,” said Laura Hardman, Plastic-Free Oceans Program Director at Ocean Wise. “It is important to educate Canadians about plastic pollution. Once in the environment, plastic waste has a huge impact on wildlife and ecosystems. By adopting solutions that we already have, we can reduce the flow of plastics into the ocean by up to 80%. With Corona’s help, we can raise awareness of this issue and inspire Canadians to take action to protect our oceans. “
To raise awareness in Canada of the pollution problem and in recognition of World Oceans Day (June 8), Corona will be making appearances at waterfront locations during the month of June, calling on Canadians for help. sculptures made with plastics pulled from Canadian shores. These sculptures, aptly dubbed Corona Plastic Bathers, embody our collective contribution to plastic pollution, and were created to materialize the statistic that Canadians use more than 125 kilograms of plastic per person each year.1, nearly double the average body weight of a person. Swimmers will highlight the harsh reality of shoreline pollution in Canada, to inform Canadians of the possible impact of certain lifestyle choices on our environment, and to provide Canadians with another way to learn about Corona’s shoreline cleanups, in partnership with Ocean Wise. Swimmers will include a QR code that will allow Canadians to register for a self-directed cleanse in their area.
