For some, it will be many years. Kossen doesn’t understand why you don’t build company apartments. His guess: It is not lucrative for investors and it is easier for companies to outsource this organization to subcontractors, as are the contracts. This way they do not have to hire people, take no legal responsibility and get rid of them quickly. The workers are therefore not entitled to a works council.
“Labor law assumes that everyone can assert their rights, but that doesn’t work for migrant workers,” says Kossen, in whose association “Action Dignity and Justice” offer help to lawyers free of charge. However, many employees would not complain because they would lose their job and accommodation. Or they have already resigned, as a Romanian worker told him.
“Pride and self-confidence are taken away from people”
They feel like third-class people – “and are deliberately treated that way,” says Kossen. “People are deprived of pride and self-confidence so that they are easier to manipulate.” He speaks of “modern slavery”, like recently on a talk show, where a representative of the entrepreneur fiercely started. Kossen smiles friendly, he stays with it.
He incorporates many things into his sermons. “You also have to read and understand the Bible politically. So it makes sense to say something about issues that have to do with shaping society and the world. I have no hesitation in naming relationships and those responsible for the name.” The church “must see for itself how it shapes employment relationships”.
Through his commitment, he has also made enemies: Once a rabbit that had been pulled away lay in front of his door – “Greetings from the meat industry”. Kossen is not intimidated by this. He’ll keep talking, soft in tone, not sparing criticism.
