Corning Incorporated was named a Top Employer by l’American Association of People with Disabilities et Disability:IN for the fourth consecutive year.
Corning received the maximum score of 100 in the 2021 Disability Equality Index (DEI)a national, transparent benchmark that provides companies with an objective assessment of their disability inclusion policies and practices, according to the DEI website.
“Creating an inclusive culture for our employees whose lives have been impacted by disability is core to our values,” said Dana Moss, Division Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equality and inclusion. “We are honored to be recognized for our inclusiveness in the workplace for the fourth consecutive year and look forward to continuing to create an environment where everyone can thrive.”
Beth Alderman, a Corning employee for 16 years and a principal engineer, said the company sets and upholds high standards for inclusion and accommodation. She said the company has focused on their comfort, health and safety despite multiple surgeries and ongoing autoimmune conditions.
”I’m not surprised that we are getting such good results. It’s been my experience since working here,” Beth said. ”I think it’s a very unique company. I’ve talked to friends who work elsewhere and I don’t think they get the same support as Corning employees.”
Companies are evaluated on their performance in five categories: culture and leadership, company-wide access, employment practices, community engagement and support, and supplier diversity. Questions include specific information about resource groups, executive sponsors, accommodation options, and internal and external outreach.
In its request, Corning highlighted the work of Abled and DisAbled Partnering Together (ADAPT), an employee resource group that helps employees find resources for all types of disabilities, including short-term disabilities, permanent, invisible, visible, mental, physical and emotional.
“According to demographic statistics, one in five people in the world has a disability. Furthermore, one in four workers have taken leave in the past two years to support a disability for parental, family or medical reasons,” said current ADAPT Co-Chair Vamshi Gudapati. “There is a long list of benefits that inclusivity brings to a business, and Corning is one of the companies at the forefront of inclusivity. This inclusivity really helps Corning embrace diversity of thought, which leads to new innovations and increased revenue.”
