Eliminated from the start in these last three tournaments and beaten four times in her last five games, Alizé Cornet raised her head on Monday for her debut in Charleston. The French number 1 easily won (6-0, 7-5) against the American Alycia Parks, 150th in the standings.
Alizé Cornet is not yet dancing the Charleston in South Carolina. However, the Niçoise took advantage of her debut in the American tournament on clay to recover her (small) health. Cornet, who remained on three defeats in the first round (to Miami, Indian Wells and Lyon), broke his entry elimination streak by overcoming the obstacle of the first game this time.
The French number 1 and seeded number 12 in the tournament did not have an insurmountable opponent in front of her, far from it, since she was opposed to Alycia Parks, 150th in the standings. She nevertheless had the merit of returning to success, winning in two sets (6-0, 7-5) against the American.
Cornet shook in the second set
However after sticking a 6-0 to the local player in the first set, Cornet was still very scared. The 34th in the world, who remained on four defeats in five games since her fabulous run at the Australian Open (she had reached the quarter-finals in the Grand Slam for the first time in her career), indeed found itself trailing 5-1 in the second set after a catastrophic start to the set.
Luckily for Cornet, she saved herself a final round after knocking down Parks with a superb reaction from her back against the wall. Qualified for a second match in a tournament for the first time since February 20 (in Doha), the Niçoise, who admitted after her slap against Riske in Miami that she could not find the solution, will face the Romanian Ruse or another American Baptist.
