Corn tortilla source of energy for exercise; fattening myth

During the health emergency for Covid-19, which has forced a large part of the population into confinement, thousands of people have sought alternatives to exercise at home, but they must not forget to maintain a healthy and balanced diet, in which they cannot miss the consumption of corn tortilla, due to its high nutritional value and fiber content, said Isaac Calderón Parra, a specialist in nutrition applied to high performance sports.

“Even high-performance athletes are recommended to consume corn tortilla, not only because of the energy provided by this food, but because of all its nutrients it favors muscle recovery, strengthens the immune system and helps prevent diseases.”

He indicated that the corn tortilla is one of the main sources of energy that Mexicans have, because it not only contains calcium, but also vitamin B, which helps to strengthen the immune system, vitamins A, C and D, minerals, folic acid, iron and zinc, among others.

In this sense, he specified that “tortillas are one of the most complete foods available to all Mexicans and their nutritional characteristics can hardly be found in any other food, especially if they are tortillas made with nixtamalized corn flour, which in cases such as the Maseca or Minsa trademarks are added with folic acid, iron, zinc, vitamins and minerals ”.

He stressed that, in the search for weight loss, many people stop consuming tortillas, which can even be risky to health.

“If you want to reduce weight, it is not only necessary to exercise, but also a healthy and balanced diet, but it must be under the supervision of a nutrition expert who takes into account the type of exercises that the person is doing.”

“On many occasions, people get carried away by the myth that the omelette makes you fat and in the desire to lose weight, eliminates it from their daily diet, which can be very dangerous because they are not only exposed to fainting due to lack of energy and fatigue that causes them to eliminate this food from their diet, but also significantly affect their immune system and they are more prone to diseases ”.

What many people ignore, he stressed, is that the corn tortilla is high in fiber, which helps a good digestion and favors weight loss.

It is important to remember that the input market for the production of corn tortillas in Mexico is distributed as follows: Nixtamal 65%, Maseca with 25%, Minsa has 8%, Harimasa has 1%, Cargill has 1%. 0.50%, Macsa has 0.40% and White has 0.20%.
