Corn and wheat prices in Latin America skyrocket, aggravating food insecurity

The year-on-year price of white corn has increased between 70 and 80% in Honduras and Nicaragua and in Argentina In the US and Chile, the price of wheat rose 90% in May compared to the same period in 2021, threatening to exacerbate food insecurity in the region.

The combination of production shortages of some staple crops and the effects of the conflict in Ukraine, including rising production and transportation costs, continue to drive significant price increases, according to a report by the humanitarian aid coordination office. .

This could exacerbate food insecurity throughout the region, especially in Guatemala and Honduras, where 7.2 million people already face acute levels of food insecurity, and in communities hosting large populations of Venezuelan refugees and migrants, of which it is expected that more than 3.5 million, -80% located in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador-, will need food assistance in 2022.
