Corinthians Rejects Cuca Return After Overturned Conviction

Duilio had a ‘moral debt’ with Cuca, if there had been no trial. Augusto Melo, no. Return is ruled out Corinthians

Cuca’s relief had no resonance in Parque São Jorge.

The Bern-Mitteland Regional Court overturning the coach’s rape conviction against a 13-year-old girl did not impress the new managers.

The now president Augusto Melo remembers the chaos that was last year, when Cuca was hired. He ended up being massacred by the media. And he had ‘unforgettable’ tension in the two games he led the team.

For advisors who support Melo, the situation is clear.

Cuca was not declared innocent.

Only his trial was annulled because it was done in absentia, that is, there was no one to defend him against the gang rape, and he ended up being convicted.

He and three Grêmio players ended up accused of sexually attacking Sandra Pfäffi, girl who went to the hotel where the Brazilian team was staying to win a Grêmio shirt. The case happened in 1987.

The protests against Cuca at Corinthians were continuous. And they sabotaged their stay Reproduction/Instagram

Cuca ended up being sentenced to 15 months in prison plus an $8,000 fine. He was detained, preventively, before trial, for 30 days.

The trial took place in 1989.

According to the lawsuit, Sandra recognized Cuca as one of those who attacked her.

And there’s the trainer’s semen log.

Even so, he has worked normally since then.

As a player and coach.

Until he arrived at Corinthians on April 20th of last year.

The revolt was immense.

From the media, which revived the case. And it aroused the anger of a large part of public opinion.

The pressure was enormous.

And Cuca only stayed for two games, when he asked to leave.

When saying goodbye to then president Duilio Monteiro Alves, he assured that ‘one day he would return’ to Parque São Jorge, after proving his innocence.

Cuca was not cleared.

The conviction process was annulled.

And as the crime expires, there will be no new trial.

Furthermore, there is something immutable.

Sandra died.

Something that very few people knew.

“Today I understand that I should have dealt with this matter earlier. I am relieved with the result and convinced that the last eight months, even though they were emotionally difficult, happened at the right time and from God”, said Cuca, through his consultancy press.

Cuca stayed at Parque São Jorge for a week. And he said he would ‘come back’. With the current board, interest is zero Rodrigo Coca/Disclosure/Corinthians

The technician paid two lawyers to work on dismissing the case.

If Duilio were in power, perhaps Cuca would have a new chance at Corinthians.

Perhaps.

But with Augusto Melo, the chance is practically zero.

He and football director Rubens Gomes want the coach and players to maintain full focus on football.

With Cuca there is no such certainty.

On social media there is a lot of controversy over the term ‘innocent’.

This is because in an interview, as a player, he even told the Porto Alegre newspaper, Zero Hora, before the trial, in 1987:

“I have open arms for any decision. We have to pay, everyone involved. There is no point in separating lesser or greater participation.”

Words he never denied.

In other words, wherever he goes to work, Cuca may be challenged.

Even more so at Corinthians.

Duilio felt in a ‘moral debt’ to the coach, if his case in Switzerland was terminated.

He was.

Even if it didn’t prove his innocence.

Cuca feels free to go back to work.

Athletico tried to sign him.

He heard ‘no’ and hired Juan Carlos Osorio, formerly of São Paulo and the Colombian national team.

He remains an object of desire in Botafogo.

But at Corinthians, no.

The club that first defended women’s rights doesn’t want any confusion.

And this board gives up working with Cuca…
