Corinthians is officially qualified for the quarterfinals of the Campeonato Paulista after Tuesday’s round. São Bento was defeated by São Paulo and no longer reaches Corinthians in the classification of Group C, that is, Timão is already guaranteed in the next phase.
The classification with two rounds in advance comes in the group with the greatest disparity between the first and second place, today Ituano. The team from the interior of São Paulo still has three games to play – if they win all of them and Corinthians loses all of them, they can surpass Timão in goal difference. The team from Itu, by the way, enters the field this Wednesday and, if they don’t win, it already makes the club from Parque São Jorge the leader.
Fernando Lázaro now knows that he has peace of mind to face Santos and Santo André in the sequence of games that close the first phase of Paulista. Corinthians, if they confirm the first place by scoring at least one point in these last two clashes, will advance to face the second place in Group C, still undefined. Ituano, São Bento and Ferroviária fight against relegation and also for the classification – see table below.
With 18 points, the interest is also in the general classification of Paulista. The best campaign faces the worst in the semifinals and this “advantage” also defines the field command in the semifinals and in the second leg of the final. At the moment, it is the fourth best campaign behind Palmeiras (21), São Bernardo (20) and São Paulo (20).
