Still without definition about the new coach, Corinthians can go to the field against Independiente Del Valle, from Ecuador, for Libertadores, with an interim coach on the edge of the field. The match, valid for the third round of the tournament, is scheduled for this Tuesday, at 9 pm, at the Neo Química Arena.
If the hiring of a new coach who takes over the team by then does not materialize, Corinthians may have an interim coach in the Libertadores game for the third time in history.
The first name to assume the Timão in that condition was Oswaldo de Oliveira, in the 1999 edition, before the quarterfinal duel against Palmeiras. At the time, the commander had not yet been appointed to the position, previously held by Evaristo de Macedo, who left the club after being eliminated by Juventude in the Copa do Brasil.
The second interim coach of the Parque São Jorge club in the South American tournament was Ademar Braga, in 2006. Like Oswaldo, Ademar replaced Antônio Lopes, who left command of the team after the 2-1 defeat by São Paulo, in the Paulistão, and led the alvinegro team from the return game against Tigres, from Mexico, in the group stage of the competition, with a 1-0 victory. Later, he was also hired as coach.
Osmar Loss almost made the list in 2018. After the departure of Fábio Carille, the club’s under-20 coach played his first game in Libertadores, already officially presented as the new coach by president Andrés Sanchez, not taking over as interim . His debut, however, ended in Timão’s 1-0 defeat against Millonarios, from Colombia, still in the group stage.
Indefinition also in the interim
Danilo was chosen by the board to temporarily take over Corinthians after Cuca left. He led the team in the 2-1 defeat by Palmeiras, last Saturday, for the Brasileirão.
However, the under-20 coach may not be on the sidelines against Independiente Del Valle because he does not have the CBF PRO license, certification required to command teams in Libertadores games. In this way, Fernando Lázaro, who left the position of coach to return to being an assistant to the team, can return to assume the role.
Interestingly, Lázaro left office precisely in the defeat to Argentinos Juniors in the second round of the continental tournament. Unlike the two previous names that managed the club on an interim basis, he can do the opposite, commanding the team after being demoted from the role of effective coach.
Like Danilo, Fernando Lázaro does not have a PRO license either. However, he signed up for the CBF certification course last March and the entity authorized him to hold the position at Libertadores, considering his attitude of “good faith”.
