Travel organization Corendon is going to move its holiday flights that are scheduled for today and tomorrow from Schiphol to Rotterdam The Hague Airport. Passengers are now being informed. “In general, they are very relieved because they were very afraid of the suspected chaos at Schiphol,” says Corendon.
Yesterday Schiphol called on airlines to cancel flights to delete because of the expected crowds. Corendon says that would mean that many holidays cannot go on. To prevent this, the airline will therefore divert to Rotterdam. Returning holidaymakers who now land at Rotterdam The Hague Airport are taken to Schiphol by bus if their car is parked there.
Schiphol is currently consulting with airlines to “see how the pressure at the airport can be reduced”. This includes moving flights to another time to spread out the crowds.
Request Schiphol
Yesterday it was announced that not all airlines want to comply with Schiphol’s request to cancel flights. KLM already expected last night that flights would be canceled for today. At least sixty KLM flights were canceled at Schiphol this morning.
Transavia, among others, does not agree with Schiphol’s request. “We’ve already canceled flights and adjusted our schedule lately. We’re going to fly what’s on the schedule now.” Travel organization TUI also does not plan to cancel flights.
‘Had trouble for two years’
The association of travel companies ANVR is not happy with Schiphol’s request. The ANVR says that travel organizations do not plan to cancel flights.
ANVR director Frank Oostdam said in the NOS Radio 1 News that airlines have already had a “bin of misery” over them in the past two years, because they could not fly because of corona. “And now we can travel, but we can’t get to the planes. That causes frustration.”
Oostdam calls it sour for holidaymakers who have to queue for a long time and may not be able to travel. According to a Schiphol spokesperson, the airport got off to a good start this morning. It is noticeable that it is busier because of the May holiday. Passengers therefore also have to take long lines into account today.
