Coparmex insists that reform to the Judicial Branch will affect the economy

Mexico City. The Mexican Employers’ Confederation (Coparmex) regretted that the Senate of the Republic approved the reform to the Judicial Branch without listening to various sectors that expressed concern and insisted that this measure “will have serious repercussions on the productive activity of the country.”

The private sector body, which is the only one to have commented on the changes so far, said that after Mexico has been characterized by demonstrating political maturity, Tuesday’s session in the Senate showed “a reality of impositions.”

“Instead of strengthening the judicial system and promoting open dialogue, we have witnessed a rushed process that does not build true justice for all,” he said.

He considered that “it is a mistake to go ahead with the proposal”, since it places the Judiciary far from being independent and in “extreme vulnerability to political and economic interests”.

“The rush to approve this reform responds more to immediate political interests than to the real needs of justice in Mexico,” he said.

He insisted that with the constitutional changes, the balance has been lost, which will have repercussions on economic indicators and productive activity in the nation.

“The uncertainty generated by the reform will affect national and international investment, market confidence and the development of key projects for our economy,” he said.

He noted that any modification to the justice system must be carried out with full awareness of the division of powers, the economic effects and the international commitments assumed by Mexico.

“The consequences will be permanent in a society that demands more equitable and efficient justice,” he said.

Coparmex warned that “the uncertainty generated by this reform is already evident in national and international companies, which have expressed their concern about the risk of politicization in the selection of judges, which could weaken the rule of law.”

The private sector organization urged legislators in the local Congresses of the 32 federal entities to reflect, discuss and decide with their citizens in mind and with the need to guarantee access to everyday justice.

“Although we consider this reform to be a mistake, we will not cease in our efforts to ensure that future decisions are responsible and for the benefit of all Mexicans,” he said.

“For 95 years, Coparmex has been an active and critical voice, promoting well-being and defending the future of our country, because Mexico is bigger than any particular interest that seeks to control it,” he concluded.
