BOLIVIA-URUGUAY 0-2
Successful qualification to the quarter-finals for Uruguay, who beat Bolivia 2-0 (in their third defeat in three games) thus obtaining their first victory in this edition of the Copa America after a defeat and a draw. A goal in each half resolves the game against the bottom of the group A standings at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiabá. La Celeste had never scored in 2021 with their players. The only one to score for the national team coached by Tabarez was Arturo Vidal three days ago, deflecting a bank from Vecino in his own goal in the 1-1 draw with Chile. 40 ‘, in fact, on a cross from the right by De Arrascaeta, Quinteros intervenes very badly in an overhead kick and the last decisive touch is revealed by the goalkeeper Lampe. The latter redeems himself, avoiding doubling on a great round shot by Bentancur. He can’t do anything however at 79 ‘, when Cavani finally manages to break free in this tournament, correcting a cross from the left of the substitute Facundo Torres with the right flat low shot. In the last of the five minutes of injury time, the failed goal by Maxi Gomez is sensational, sending Valverde to the side with an empty net. A bit of “Italians” are also on the pitch: Nandez, Godin and Vecino start the team, while Bentancur takes over De La Cruz in the second half.
CHILE-PARAGUAY 0-2
Bolivia that is arithmetically eliminated from the Copa America after Paraguay’s 2-0 over Chile. A surprising result arrives at the Mané Garrincha national stadium in Brasilia, but by no means deserved. The national team coached by the Uruguayan Lasarte is a shadow of itself despite the higher technical rate; and so that of Berizzo takes full advantage of it, avoiding trouble on the last day, winning in turn the qualification for the quarter-finals and also the momentary second place in the group that includes Argentina and Uruguay right in front of the Roja. The advantage in the 33rd minute is the work of Braian Samudio, headed by the development of a corner kick. And in the second half it is Almiron who closes every speech from the spot: the penalty is granted to Albirroja in the 58th minute due to a blow from Medel to Carlos Gonzalez. The Bologna player himself becomes the protagonist of a few moments of tension during the interval, when he has some quarrels at the return of the locker room with some opposing player before the situation risked escalating. In the final match, Gonzalez risks big when he hits the ball with a punch in the area: long revision at the Var, but it is not a penalty. Chile ends their initial round with 5 points and will now have to wait whether they finish it in third place or fourth. 90 minutes on the pitch for a Vidal colorless.
