SAO PAULO – The Copa America finds itself without a host country just two weeks before its kick-off, as the body that governs soccer in South America, Conmebol, has withdrawn the organization of the tournament from Argentina.
La Conmebol explained on Twitter that it had taken this decision due to the health situation in Argentina, where the number of new cases of COVID-19 is on the rise.
The organization added that it was exploring the various options available to it. Other countries have reportedly signaled their interest in hosting the competition, but their identities have not been disclosed.
A new host country should be announced “soon”.
The Copa America is scheduled to take place from June 13 to July 10. South American teams are already in preparation for this tournament, as well as for the two World Cup qualifying rounds starting this week.
Argentina is facing a further rise in COVID-19 cases in its territory. New containment measures were imposed last weekend, when the weekly average is around 35,000 new cases and 500 deaths.
Colombia, which was to host the event in partnership with Argentina, renounced this privilege on May 20 due to protests against its president Ivan Duque.
