The Copa America final will not be played behind closed doors. The city hall of Rio de Janeiro, one of the Brazilian cities most affected by the pandemic, on Friday authorized the presence of the public at the Maracana stadium for the final between Brazil and Argentina, with a gauge of 10%. The tournament was supposed to take place entirely behind closed doors, but the town hall made this decision “because the organizers presented protocols to protect the health of those involved, with adequate preventive measures against the spread of Covid-19“.
The Maracana, a mythical temple of Brazilian football, will therefore be able to accommodate around 7,800 supporters, the official capacity of the stadium being 78,000 seats. To gain access to the stadium, you will need to present a negative Covid test. And once in the grandstand, a distance of two meters between each group of people coming together must be respected. Brazil agreed to organize the Copa America at a moment’s notice, two weeks before kick-off, after Colombia and Argentina withdrew for fear of Covid-19.
