Copa America 2021: The reasons for Mexico’s absence

Published on : / Through David Sani

Mexico is not participating in this edition of the Copa America. The Tricolors, who were in the game 5 years ago in the United States, follow the competition from home. Here are the reasons for this situation.

This edition of the Copa America, unlike the previous ones, does not include the Concacaf countries. This is how Mexico, which is a member of Concacaf, found itself out of the game for the South American Football Confederation (Comnebol) competition.

Since 1993 and this for more than 2 decades, the Tricolors were counted among the Nations invited to the Copa America. In 1993 and 2001, Mexico reached the final but never won the trophy. After this period at the top in the competition, the Tricolors will string together approximate performances and disappointing results during the other editions.

The team therefore distanced itself from the Comnebol tournament, no longer finding a priority in playing it. Mexico will therefore no longer participate in the Copa America. The Greens will instead be part of the 2021 edition of the Gold cup which will be held from July 10 to August 1 in the United States.
