Stades

For this edition, CONMEBOL has decided to retain six stadiums, located in five cities. The Estádio do Morumbi (67,420 seats) in São Paulo, for example, will host the opening match, opposing Brazil to X. As for the final, it will be played in the traditional and legendary Maracanã (74,730 seats) in Rio de Janeiro.

Other important meetings, the demi-finales were held at the Grêmio Arena in Porto Alegre and at the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte.

  • Salvador : Arena Fonte Nova (51,900 places)
  • Rio de Janeiro : Maracana (74,738 places)
  • São Paulo : Morumbi Stadium (67,428 places) and Allianz Parque (47,713 places)
  • Belo Horizonte : Mineirão Stadium (58 170 places)
  • Porto Alegre : Arena do Gremio (55,662 places)

Participants

Twelve teams will compete for the title, divided into three pools of 4. In addition to ten South American nations (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela), two “foreign” countries will be guests of honor in 2019, Qatar and Japan.

How to qualify for the quarter-finals?

Given that CONMEBOL has decided to summon 12 teams, and that there will therefore be three pools of four teams, the situation is simple. The first two of each group (A, B, C) will automatically qualify for the quarter-finals. As for the last two qualifying places, they will go to the two “best” third places. Among the 3rd, there will therefore be an unfortunate, the one who will have the worst balance sheet.

The former winners

During the last edition (celebrating the 100th anniversary of the competition in the United States) in 2016, Chile won against Argentina on penalties. A narrow victory and the second consecutive success for the “Roja”, after a first acquired a year earlier against … the same Argentines.

However, in the history of the competition, two teams dominate, Uruguay (15) and Argentina (14), ahead of another historic selection, Brazil (8).

  • Uruguay : 1016, 1917, 1920, 1923, 1924, 1926, 1935, 1942, 1956, 1959, 1967, 1983, 1987, 1995, 2011
  • Argentine : 1921, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1937, 1941, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1991, 1993
  • Brazil: 1919, 1922, 1949, 1989, 1997, 1999, 2004, 2007
  • Chili : 2015 – 2016
  • Paraguay : 1953 – 1979
  • Peru: 1939 – 1975
  • Colombia: 2003
