The British Chairmanship of COP26 has announced a historic the pledge of over 100 leaders to end deforestation by 2030. It is noted that the agreement to protect the world’s forests is the biggest breakthrough in one generation.
Participating countries include Canada, Russia, Brazil, Democratic Republic of the Congo and other countries. The territory of these countries accounts for 85% of the world’s forests, which are located on an area of more than 13 million square kilometers.
The agreement will be announced on Tuesday by UK representatives. It is known that a forest conservation project has been allocated 8.75 billion pounds (about 10.30 billion euros) and mobilized 5.3 billion pounds of private investment.
At the same time, one billion will go to protect the Congo Basin, which is home to the second largest rainforest in the world.
“We will have a chance to end the long history of mankind as a conqueror of nature and become its guardian,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
He recalled that forests are the lungs of our planet. They absorb about a third of the CO2 emitted annually from fossil fuels.
