“The vaccine is life, it is the only option to prevent diseases and this is an invitation to fathers and mothers to be aware of the need for their children’s regular vaccination schedule,” said Jhoana Bonilla, analyst national at Coosalud Epidemiology, about the adequacy of these sessions to capture the susceptible population with incomplete immunity schemes and, in particular, children.

He said that the country is working in a smart way with everyone health system actors to develop different strategies to expand vaccination coverage.

The importance of finishing the picture

Clinical psychologist Juan Manuel Anaya, director of the Coosalud Health Research and Innovation Center (CIISA), pointed out that vaccination is the process through which a person’s immune system is trained to recognize or share pathogens. (infectious agents) such as viruses and bacteria and, when we get the vaccine, we give our body a small part of that pathogen, but without making us sick. This causes our body to learn to recognize this agent and create a special defense so that, if we encounter it in the future, we can easily fight it.

In that sense, he stressed the importance of keeping up to date with the latest information vaccination from the first year of a child’s life.

“Completing the 2 vaccination schedule at the first stage of life is, firstly, essential for early protection. Babies are more vulnerable to serious illnesses, and vaccines help protect them before they get sick. Vaccines are designed to be given in specific doses and at specific times and a child who does not have the full schedule may end up with limited immunity. Second, herd immunity gives a high percentage of the population vaccinated and the spread of disease is reduced, protecting those who cannot be vaccinated, such as people with certain medical conditions that prevent them to do that. And thirdly, it prevents diseases that were previously dangerous and common such as measles or polio,” he said.

Vaccinations available on the day

Vaccines against preventable diseases such as meningitis, measles, diphtheria, polio and smallpox, among others, are available free of charge to young children. 0, 2, 4, 6, 7 months and up to 5 years.

There is also a tetanus and flu vaccine available for adults, as well as those for pregnant women and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, for girls and boys from 9 to 17 years of age. In this regard, Jhoana Bonilla emphasized the importance of completing and strengthening the vaccine against covid-19, given the incidence of the virus that was discovered a few months ago in the country.

“This day and those that will remain registered until the end of the year, fundamentally help us in our work to care and protect them to avoid preventable diseases,” Bonilla noted.

Likewise, he emphasized that Colombia has an extensive vaccination record compared to other countries in Latin America; however, he said that a there is a slight delay, which is being carried out as a result of the schedule developed this year by conferences monthly.

Myths about vaccines

At the same time, the director of CIISA mentioned the myths or false beliefs about vaccination in girls and boys. He pointed out that this is necessary among the population of children and the The safety of vaccines has been widely proven, so much so that it has enabled humanity to overcome infectious diseases that guaranteed its survival.

Anaya pointed out that there are some myths, such as that vaccines cause autism. He made sure that this comes from a dishonest and extensive survey around the world. Scientific evidence has shown that there is no relationship between vaccines and autism.

“It’s also not true,” he said, “that vaccines contain harmful toxins. “The components of the vaccines are safe, they are all sterile, that is, they do not cause disease,” added the expert. He also rejected the idea that the immunity that comes from the disease can be better than the immunity from the vaccine. For example, it was believed that those who contracted Covid-19 were vaccinated for life, however, this has been proven to be a false belief. “

This Saturday’s event will be held in health centers and authorized satellite centers across the country, including shopping centers and other places accessible to the public. Door-to-door coverage and service in the most vulnerable residential areas and hard-to-reach areas is also being considered.

Coosalud reaffirms its work in close collaboration with the health secretaries of the country’s territorial organizations and the Ministry of Health to guarantee the success of this initiative.
