Jakarta –
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md revealed that his ministry plans to hold mass pardons for drug convicts. Mahfud’s plan is supported by Deputy Chairman of Commission III DPR RI Ahmad Sahroni.
“I really agree and appreciate Pak Mahfud’s steps, really support Pak Mahfud’s idea,” Sahroni told reporters, Thursday (12/10/2023).
Sahroni not without reason agreed with Mahfud’s plan. According to him, the plan for mass pardon is to allow prisons to be used for big-time drug dealers.
“Let prison not be given to drug users but specifically to big dealers who will disturb the nation’s young people in the future,” said Sahroni.
As is known, Mahfud revealed that his ministry is planning to grant mass pardons to drug convicts. The mass pardon was given because more than 50 percent of prison inmates were drug convicts, which resulted in prisons exceeding capacity.
“Yes, we are, but it has not been discussed in the cabinet, but at the political, legal and security level, our coordination is planning a mass pardon, you know, there are around 270 thousand prison inmates, 51 percent of whom are drugs,” said Mahfud after a limited meeting with the President. Joko Widodo (Jokowi) regarding the eradication of drugs at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, Thursday (12/10).
Mahfud said that the granting of mass pardon would later be discussed with the Supreme Court (MA). Apart from that, drug convicts who will be pardoned will also be researched first to check whether they deserve to be pardoned by the president.
“And there are a lot of drugs because as users, then sometimes there are some of them who might be trapped by their friends, trapped by naughty officials and so on. This will be examined one by one, then we will propose a mass pardon. Of course, mass pardons will be granted. “It must also be discussed with the Supreme Court. We are currently planning that,” explained Mahfud.
Mahfud said that this was not the first time this mass pardon had been granted. Previously, mass pardons were also given during the COVID-19 pandemic to prisoners with mild cases.
So, when will this mass pardon be granted?
“Later, we’ll plan it first, after it’s taken out, where we’ll go and so on. Everything has to be prepared, then we’ll have a meeting,” said Mahfud.
Nevertheless, Mahfud emphasized that the plan to grant mass pardons would be carried out before 2024. He said this plan would be immediately reported to President Jokowi when it was ready.
