TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security Mahfud MD responding to calls for the removal of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leader Firli Bahuri in the midst of investigating the alleged extortion case against former Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL). He handed it over completely to the relevant anti-corruption agencies.
“Just leave it to the Corruption Eradication Committee to deal with it themselves,” said Mahfud MD, when met at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Thursday, October 12 2023. “It’s called pressure, some are telling you to resign, some are not telling you to resign,” said Mahfud. According to Mahfud MD, each institution has the size or capacity to assess a problem.
Polda Metro Jaya is currently investigating a case of alleged extortion by the KPK leadership against SYL in handling alleged corruption cases at the ministry of agriculture in 2020-2023. The report emerged from a dumas or public complaint.
The Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of Polda Metro Jaya has rescheduled the examination of the KPK Chairman’s aide Firli Bahuri on Friday 13 October 2023. Firli’s aide was not present at the examination on Wednesday 11 October 2023.
The police have examined 11 witnesses regarding the alleged extortion case by the KPK leadership against SYL. Polda Metro Jaya investigators, this Thursday, again examined three witnesses regarding the extortion case. The examination material is about incidents of alleged criminal acts of corruption that occurred. Four of the 11 people who have been summoned by investigators from the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate (Ditreskrimsus) of Polda Metro Jaya are SYL, SYL’s driver, SYL’s aide and Semarang Police Chief Commissioner Irwan Anwar.

President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said that information about alleged blackmail carried out by the Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Firli Bahuri is still confusing. He admitted that he had not received detailed information about this matter. “I don’t know the problem in detail yet because (extortion information) is still confusing,” said Jokowi at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Saturday afternoon, October 7 2023.
Jokowi said he did not want to comment much about Firli. He is worried that if he comments, he will be seen as interfering in the Firl Bahurii case. “I commented that later someone said to intervene,” he said. “So I’m still looking for correct information about what this case is like.”
KPK is currently investigating three clusters of alleged corruption at the Ministry of Agriculture, namely extortion in office, gratification and money laundering crimes. Corruption Eradication Committee investigators have searched a number of places related to this investigation, including the official residence of the Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo and the office of the ministry of agriculture some time ago.
From a search at Syahrul Yasin Limpo’s official residence, KPK investigators found tens of billions in rupiah and foreign currency. The KPK also found 12 firearms which have been reported to Polda Metro Jaya. Syahrul Yasin Limpo resigned from his position as minister of agriculture due to allegations of corruption that surrounded him.
