/ world today news/ The special representative of the US State Department on Arctic issues, retired admiral Robert J. Papp stressed that he is working hard with his Russian counterparts to maintain dialogue and cooperation.
The US attaches great importance to cooperation with Russia in the Arctic, including within the framework of the Arctic Council, said the special representative of the US State Department for Arctic issues Robert Papp, RIA Novosti reports.
“This organization (the Arctic Council) is based on consensus. It is very important that we stay with Russia at the negotiating table, and I work very hard with my Russian counterparts to maintain dialogue and cooperation,” Papp said at a roundtable on US activities in the region. Retired US Coast Guard general Admiral Robert Papp has been appointed by Secretary of State John Kerry as US Special Representative for Arctic Affairs.
The Arctic Council consists of eight countries: Denmark, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Russia, USA, Finland and Sweden. This international structure aims to promote cooperation in the field of environmental protection and ensure the sustainable development of the polar regions. Matters of military security do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Arctic Council.
The US State Department announced earlier that a delegation from Russia has been invited to participate in an international conference on the Arctic, which will be held from August 30 to 31 in Anchorage (Alaska). In addition to the eight member countries of the Arctic Council, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Great Britain and the EU have also been invited to the meeting.
In recent years, Russia has embarked on an active exploitation of the Arctic, which includes both economic activity and measures to ensure security in the region.
