Cooperation to Enhance Youth Football: Vorarlberg Allocates 900,000 Euros Annually to Football Academy

The state of Vorarlberg, the football association and the Vorarlberg professional clubs will work together in the future – as far as the youngsters are concerned. More money would flow to the local football academy in the future, around 900,000 euros a year. Negotiations for this lasted almost two years.

According to the state of Vorarlberg, Vorarlberg is currently more strongly represented in top-flight Austrian football than it has been for a long time: two clubs – SCR Altach and Austria Lustenau – in the first Bundesliga, two other clubs – FC Dornbirn and SW Bregenz – in the second Bundesliga.

Top training for young players

In order for more players from Vorarlberg to be used in the domestic top teams in the future, the state, the Vorarlberg Football Association and the four Bundesliga clubs would work together in the future to enable the young players to receive top-quality training, according to a state broadcast. A corresponding contract was signed on Thursday.

“Not every club can have a training center, an academy,” emphasizes Horst Lumper, President of the Vorarlberg Football Association. “It costs a lot of money,” says Lumper. The bottom line is that it is cheaper to pay your contribution and have a say, but not to conduct the training yourself.

New cooperation for young footballers

With Altach, Lustenau, Dornbirn and Bregenz, Vorarlberg now has four professional clubs in the state. However, to ensure that more young Vorarlberg footballers get a chance in the future, there is now cooperation between the state, football association and professional clubs.

900,000 euros annually for the football academy

Through the cooperation, it will be possible to raise around 900,000 euros annually for the football academy in the future. The four first division teams would each contribute 150,000 euros, the second division teams 70,000 euros each. “The state funding will be increased by 100,000 to around 370,000 euros per year,” says state councilor Martina Rüscher (ÖVP). The Vorarlberg Football Association pays the difference.

Investments in staff and new places

The football academy acts as a central element in the cooperation. However, there is an intensive interaction between the association, clubs, academy, environment support and school and vocational training. Soccer talents are looked after in an age-appropriate, systematic and holistic manner with high quality standards. One would invest both in employees and in places, says Lumper. “The demands on the academy are constantly increasing and so are the costs,” he emphasizes.
