Cooperation Needed to Educate Parents about Measles and Rubella Amidst Outbreak in Manokwari, West Papua

TRIBUNPAPUABRAT.COM, MANOKWARI – The Manokwari District Health Office, West Papua Province requests multi-stakeholder cooperation to educate parents about measles (measles) and German measles (rubella).

Because, Manokwari has officially declared an extraordinary event (KLB) of measles rubella since Thursday (15/6/2023).

Even so, the Head of the Immunization and Surveillance Section of the Manokwari District Health Office, Mince Wilil, admitted that he often receives rejection from parents for MR immunization (measles and rubella).

As a result, of the target of 9,525 children aged 9 to 5 years who are required to receive the MR immunization, only 33 percent have been achieved, equivalent to 3,055 children (data from the Manokwari Health Office as of Thursday, (20/7/2023) at 19.00 WIT).

“This is what parents must educate, that immunization is the right of every child that must be fulfilled,” said Mince Wilil to the media in Manokwari, some time ago.

He said that since Manokwari was declared a measles outbreak, the surveillance team from the Manokwari Health Office has moved swiftly to sweep houses.

However, it is often constrained by weather factors and there are some parents who refuse.

Thus, the target of 95 percent of MR immunization has not been achieved.

Nevertheless, Mince Wilil admits that he is optimistic that he will meet the target on July 31, 2023.

From the stakeholder side, professional organizations, TP-PKK, Bunda Paud, Dharma Wanita and the media play an active role in socializing measles rubella massively to the public.

“Because some parents still think if they get serampa (measles), it’s enough to drink coconut water or sago water. Even though children must be immunized,” he explained.

He reported, data from the Manokwari Health Office as of Thursday, (20/7/2023) at 19.00 WIT, showed that 87 children had measles.

A suspected measles child in Warmare has died.

Therefore, he asked for parental awareness not to underestimate measles and rubella.

By taking the child to the nearest health care facility to get the MR immunization.

As well as, take the child to the nearest health care facility if they show symptoms of measles and rubella.

Measles has symptoms of high fever, reddish spots on the skin (rash) accompanied by cough and/or runny nose and/or red eyes (conjunctivitis).

“Rubella is similar to measles, the symptoms are mild fever or even without symptoms, so it often goes undetected,” he concluded.
