Cooperation in the military field between North Korea and Russia is expected to accelerate following the meeting between the two leaders, Kim Jong-un and Putin.
With the first-ever North Korea-Russia joint training being discussed, the international community is paying close attention to the movement.

North Korea and Russia made their military closeness visible last July with the military parade held on the day of the signing of the armistice agreement, which North Korea calls ‘Victory Day.’
For the first time in four years and five months, a summit was held at the Vostochny Cosmodrome, making it clear that they would strengthen cooperation in the military field.
In addition to the transfer of cutting-edge technologies such as satellites, what is drawing attention is whether the close relationship between North Korea and Russia will extend to joint military exercises.
Our government is closely watching the possibility of the first-ever North Korea-Russia joint military exercises.

If actual joint training takes place, the stage is likely to be the East Sea.
Considering North Korea’s poor air power and Russia’s military tactics to expand its influence in the Pacific, there is speculation that training against ROK-US naval forces may be conducted.
Recently, Chairman Kim Jong-un took steps to strengthen the naval power by personally visiting the Navy’s East Sea Fleet’s 2nd Surface Fleet and the Naval Headquarters.

Some even raise the possibility of joint exercises between North Korea, China, and Russia that go beyond North Korea and Russia and include China.
Russia is known to be considering ways for North Korea to participate in military exercises between Russia and China.
However, some analysts say that China will take a cautious stance because if it becomes deeply involved in military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, friction with the international community, including the United States, South Korea, and Japan, is inevitable.
