Cooperation Between Liepāja and Kazakhstan Boosts Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor

Here, the guests learned about the advantages of Liepāja’s business environment, as well as discussed opportunities for cooperation.

During the visit, Liepāja Special Economic Zone (SEZ) manager Uldis Hmieļevskis signed a memorandum on cooperation between transport and logistics organizations and associations with Erlan Absatov, general director of the Kazlogistics Trade Union of Transport Workers of Kazakhstan.

It envisages the development of road freight transport and multimodal transport along the Trans-Caspian international transport route, or international transport corridor, which passes through China, Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Georgia further to Turkey and European countries.

“Kazlogistics” also signed such a memorandum with the Association of Latvian Stevedoring Companies.

U. Hmielevskis points out that the volume of cargo from Central Asian countries, mainly Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, has significantly increased at the moment in Liepāja port.

“If we once talked about 20-50 thousand tons per year, now the amount of cargo from these countries is measured in six figures,”

says SEZ manager.

For example, sugar imported from South America arrives in Kazakhstan through the port of Liepāja, while aluminum is sent for export.

Amid the ongoing geopolitical changes, cooperation between Central Asia and the European Union (EU) has gained new momentum and is developing with a focus on connectivity, sustainable growth and economic development.

In the challenging conditions, taking into account hostilities, sanctions and other considerations, one of the main priorities of the cooperation between the EU and Central Asia is the creation of safe, stable and sustainable transport corridors between Europe and Central Asia, the representatives of the Ministry of Transport explain.
