Coop is one of the largest providers of apprenticeships in Switzerland. Over 1,200 apprentices in 33 professions are currently starting their training at Coop. These range from sales to logistics, administration, system catering, production and transport. This now also includes 12 apprentices as bakers, confectioners and pastry chefs (EFZ) in the supermarkets’ in-house bakeries.
“The cooperative wants to make this job profile, which is predominantly day-time work, attractive for young professionals. Coop is thus underlining its innovative vocational training program as one of the largest providers of apprenticeships in Switzerland,” Coop writes in its press release.
Mostly work during the day
The aim of the initiative is to meet the growing demand for bakers in home bakeries with well-trained specialists.
Coop has been focusing on the concept of craftsmanship in its supermarkets for some time. As a result, Coop has increased the number of in-house bakeries by 34 to a total of 71 bakeries in recent years.
“Because the training takes place in our in-house bakeries, the majority of the apprentices work during the day, which makes this profession particularly attractive for young people,” explains Annika Keller, who is responsible for vocational training at Coop, another reason.
