Coop introduces automatic stores in the Czech Republic without saleswomen and cashiers

The company’s management states that the Strakonice novelty will be supplemented by an establishment in Kaplice, and according to the results, more will be added. Coop was inspired by its sister chains in Scandinavia, where similar stores have been operating for several years.

Country shops have standard opening hours, which do not suit residents who go to work outside the village because they close in the afternoon. In some villages, only convenience stores and, in extreme cases, petrol stations offer the possibility of shopping later.

“The word self-service is gaining new content. The concept of an automated store adapts to the needs of customers for whom the need to plan their purchases according to store opening hours ends, ”says Lukáš Němčík, Director of the Development and Marketing Network.

Outside the standard opening hours, the entire store will be available, only counters with delicacies or cold cuts will be closed. However, automated stores will have an expanded offer of packaged goods.

Payment for goods should work on the principle of self-service cash registers. The customer will be able to leave the store with the purchase after verifying the payment. The supplier of the technological solution is the company Knowingstore.

“Customers will shop in the store if they have a bank identity and at the same time download a special application. Everyone will be clearly identified and double entry into the store will not allow anyone without this identification. In addition, the store will be guarded by a camera system, “added Němčík.

Rural retailers have hit bottom. The closures of stores have finally stopped

Coop has also recently begun trying out food delivery, which is also dedicated to competition. Rohlík Point is a certain alternative to contactless shopping. Customers who do not want to meet the courier and commit to it can pick up the purchase there. The Rohlík.cz online supermarket has established cooperation with Alza and will also use its AlzaBoxes.

Rural customers are likely to see the expansion of landfill sites soon. “We want to make the most of existing routes and courier rides, among other things for environmental reasons. When we pass through the place, there is no reason not to make a purchase there. That is why we plan to gradually import food from Rohlík to smaller towns or villages that are on their way to existing customers, ”said company spokeswoman Denisa Morgensteinová.

Competitive Košík.cz has been shipping throughout the Czech Republic for a year now, and customers can choose from twelve thousand dry assortment items. “The service, which was originally designed to help households during a pandemic, changed significantly during the year. Today, it is also used to supply households in municipalities with poorer access to stone shops, and it is also used by people who have fled the cities to work in cottages or so-called second homes, ”says Basket spokesman František Brož.

How has the pandemic changed e-commerce in the Czech Republic?
