Cooling centers and pools open in NYC with extended hours after extreme heat – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – The New York City Department of Emergency Management and Health Department advise New Yorkers to take precautions to combat the heat.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for New York City from Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. to Thursday at 8:00 p.m. High levels of heat and humidity are forecast Wednesday through Thursday, with heat indexes forecast in the 90s across the city.

To help New Yorkers beat the heat, New York City will open cooling centers in all five boroughs beginning Wednesday with extended hours.

To find a cooling center, including the accessible facility closest to you, call 311 (212-639-9675 for video relay service or TTY: 212-504-4115) or visit the city cooling center finder here.

New York City opens cooling centers when the heat index is forecast to be 95 degrees or higher for two or more consecutive days or if the heat index is forecast to be 100 degrees or higher for any length of time.

New Yorkers can now also find pet-friendly cooling centers in all five boroughs. The city has also partnered with Petco to offer New Yorkers and their pets additional spaces to seek relief from the heat. All locations can be found in the City Cooling Center Finder. As a reminder, service animals are always allowed in the cooling centers.

New York City will experience extreme heat again this week. Extreme heat is dangerous and we encourage New Yorkers to take steps to stay cool and safe, ”said New York City Emergency Management Commissioner John Scrivani. “We have experienced many extremely hot days this summer, and thanks to our partners, elected officials and city agencies, we have many cooling centers and outdoor cooling options available. We encourage all New Yorkers to call 311 to find the nearest cooling center. “

“Heat, like the one we will experience starting Wednesday, can be dangerous and deadly, especially for New Yorkers with pre-existing health problems,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Dave A. Chokshi. “All New Yorkers should stay in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible. If you don’t have air conditioning, use one of the city’s cooling centers or contact a friend or family member to see if there is space for you to cool off. “

To help New Yorkers beat the heat, NYC Parks extended pool hours an additional hour this Wednesday and Thursday, August 25 and 26 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. pm, instead of 7:00 pm Pool goers are reminded that a face covering is required to enter the facility and that standard pool protocols apply – bring a bathing suit, towel and a padlock to secure your belongings. In New York City, most heat-related deaths occur after exposure to heat in homes without air conditioning. Air conditioning is the best way to stay safe and healthy when it’s hot outside, but some people at risk for heat illness do not have or do not turn on an air conditioner. New Yorkers have until the end of this month to request free air conditioning. Here the information.

The New York City Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Health urge New Yorkers to take steps to protect themselves and others who may be at increased risk from the heat.
