Cool! Chinese explorer robot shows off selfie on Mars

Jakarta

China National Space Administration (CNSA) shows off the latest photo taken by the rover or robot explorer Zhurong of Mars. One of them is a selfie photo of Zhurong with the lander.

These photos were exhibited at a special ceremony in Beijing, China to celebrate the success of the first Mars exploration mission launched by China.

Photos on display include a 360-degree panoramic shot showing the landing area. This photo is a composite of several photos taken by the Zhurong rover’s navigation camera after landing.

Another photo shows the landing area on Utopia Planitia which is flat, with scattered rocks, round craters and several dunes in the distance. This photo was taken shortly after the Zhurong wheel touched the mainland of Mars.

Next is an adorable selfie that shows Zhurong with her landing platform. This photo was taken using a wireless camera placed about 10 meters from the position Zhurong.

After placing the camera on the ground, Zhurong returned to her position beside the platform and took a selfie. This photo is sent to the rover using a wireless signal, and then sent to Earth using an orbiter.

In addition, there is also a photo of the landing platform taken using Zhurong’s camera. The photo shows the bridge that Zhurong used to descend to the surface of Mars, as well as the Chinese flag attached to the bottom of the platform.

Zhurong is part of the Tianwen-1 mission consisting of an orbiter, lander and rover. The six-wheeled rover will explore Mars for three months looking for signs of ancient life on the planet.

China will publish relevant scientific data at a suitable time to share the results of space exploration developments with mankind,” said CNSA head Zhang Kejian as quoted by Xinhua, Saturday (12/6/2021).

The Tianwen-1 mission was launched from China on July 23, 2020. The mission arrived on Mars in February 2021, but Zhurong only landed on the surface of the Red Planet on May 15, 2021.

To date, Zhurong has been active on Mars for 28 Martian days which is 40 minutes longer than a day on Earth. The 240 kg rover will collect a lot of data while on Mars using its six scientific instruments.
