A few hours before the 52nd International Cervantino Festival (FIC) begins, more than 800 artists representing the 16 native cultures of Oaxaca, guest of honor state, toured the streets of this city with their traditional Calenda, also known as Convite, which is an invitation to festivities like the Guelaguetza, which will be presented tomorrow at the inauguration of the cultural and artistic meeting.
The Oaxacan delegations showed their identity and joy through dance and music. From the Coast region to the Sierra Norte, each group presented its cultural wealth. The public accompanied the artists on the tour that began in the Garden of the Ambassadors and ended in the Alhóndiga de Granaditas.
People in the street shouted long live Oaxaca! while watching the parade of enormous Calenda monkeys in their traditional clothing, among which was one that looked like Francisco Toledo.
Traditional dances, such as the Jarabe del Valle and the Dance of the Devils, were performed with grace and passion.
The joy of the Oaxacans infected the inhabitants of Guanajuato and tourists who joined the party and even tried mezcal that the participating delegations gave them.
Víctor Cata, Secretary of Cultures and Arts of Oaxaca, expressed that the Calenda is part of the Material and Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State of Oaxaca and is the way you announce the holidays.
“We are on this walk to announce to people the festival of artists and creators who will be present at the Cervantino where Oaxaca will be the central point. With this music we come to wake up the mummies of Guanajuato,” Cata added.
Mariana Aymerich, director of the FIC, expressed that she did not measure the response of the people. “We are very happy to start a festival like this. “We are happy that people cheer for Cervantino, for Oaxaca and Brazil.”
