drug smuggling
Dutch footballer Quincy Promes, who was convicted of drug smuggling last month, has been arrested at Dubai airport. The Dutch judiciary is in discussions with the United Arab Emirates about his extradition.
In recent weeks, Promes stayed in Dubai for a training camp with his Russian football club Spartak Moscow and was stopped on the way to St. Petersburg. According to a spokesperson for the Dutch public prosecutor’s office, he was arrested in Dubai for “a local violation”, but no further explanation is available for the time being. According to Russian media, Promes was involved in an accident and then fled. He was then stopped at border control at the airport.
The 32-year-old former international was sentenced two weeks ago by the court in Amsterdam to six years in prison for his involvement in the large-scale smuggling of cocaine through the port of Antwerp. That happened in absentia, as the footballer has been in Russia since 2021, where he plays for Spartak Moscow. Last year he was also sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for a stabbing at a party. The Netherlands has now requested his extradition to the United Arab Emirates.
