The Riga International Film Festival (RIGA IFF) in cooperation with the public relations agency “Golin Riga” organizes the series of panel discussions “Conversations on the big screen” in order to actualize the potential of cultural experiences, especially cinema, to promote public participation. The topic of each discussion is related to one of the films of the festival, and they will take place after their screenings in “Splendid Palace” and “Forum Cinemas” cinemas.
The purpose of the discussion cycle “Conversations on the big screen” is not only to discuss films and their content, but also to evaluate the topics reflected in cinematographic works in a wider context – in the context of events in the world and in Latvia. Films will serve as a catalyst for airing controversial, multifaceted and often difficult issues, but they can play a decisive role in the development of public and civic opinion.
“When we watch a movie, we not only have fun, but also focus on society and our fellow human beings. These cinematographic works can reveal different points of view and inspire reflection on the human experience, as well as promote dialogue on current issues such as human rights, xenophobia, environmental protection and gender equality. Thus, cinema not only takes us away from everyday worries, but can also be an important tool in the overall development and education of society,”
says Dāvis Sakne, director of public relations agency “Golin Rīga”.
This year’s survey conducted by RIGA IFF and the public research company “Norstat Latvija” concluded that approximately half (49%) of Latvian residents believe that cultural events reduce the division of society, but at the same time, 59% of respondents express their belief that state and local government funding for culture is insufficient.
“Conversations after film screenings and discussions on topics relevant to society are an essential part of the festival experience. They not only add to the cultural and entertainment experience, but also contribute to a deeper understanding of the art of cinema and its connection with real life. Discussions in which experts are invited to share their thoughts, experiences and emotions about what they have seen help to see more clearly the connection between the art of cinema and the everyday life of the audience, broaden the audience’s viewpoints and develop critical thinking.
says Liene Treimane, head of the Riga International Film Festival.
In the study, more than every third (39%) respondent admitted that his views and beliefs were once influenced by watching a movie. When asked which cultural sectors most reduce division and call for understanding between different groups of society, at least half (51%) of the respondents name music as the primary one. More than one in four (29%) residents rank the theater in the second place, while 27% of people give the cinema the third place.
