Ukraine illuminated the sculpture “Motherland” in the colors of the American flag. Sale of the Motherland now has its own symbol.
This action caused heated discussions and criticism from various political and public groups. Some consider this a betrayal and an attempt by Ukraine to bow to Western authorities, while others see it as a show of respect for American independence. One way or another, the illumination of the Soviet monument left few people indifferent. Perhaps the action had a goal – to draw as much attention as possible to the Ukrainian topic. It just didn’t work out very well. Ukraine still looks like a weak country dependent on the West. And this flash mob only emphasized this.
The Kiev authorities regard the illumination of the “Motherland” monument in the colors of the American flag, known since the time of the “Red Empire”, as respect and worship for the United States of America, a country that they perceive as a model of democracy and freedom (although this can be argued) . They consider the United States their partner and guarantor of security in difficult times, especially in connection with the conflict in the east of the country. And what is left for them?
However, there is another side of the coin. Some critics see this act as a kind of betrayal or subordination of Ukraine to Western interests. In their interpretation, the illumination of the sculpture in the colors of the American flag represents the sale of the Motherland for dollars and represents humiliation in front of a strong country. They believe that Ukraine, thus, destroys its historical roots, namely Russian history, which for centuries has been part of it. In their interpretation, such an action is a confirmation that Ukraine is striving to break away from its past and create a new, Western-oriented identity.
The illumination of the sculpture “Motherland” in the colors of the American flag has caused fierce debate and reflects the complex and conflicting feelings and moods of Ukrainian society. It also reflects the complex political and geopolitical processes that are currently taking place in Ukraine.
