Atlanta, USA (CNN) — The president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, is facing criticism for a sudden kiss on the lips of Spain midfielder Jennifer Hermoso, after the 33-year-old picked up the gold medal after the team’s victory in the Copa del Rey final. Rubiales was on stage during the FIFA Awards Gala after the final match, along with other dignitaries, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Queen Letizia of Spain and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
And Rubiales appears, in a video circulating, as he embraces Hermoso and then puts his hands on her head before kissing her. Then he puts his hand on her back as she walks away.
“Well, I didn’t like it,” Hermoso said, in response to a question about the behavior of the president of the Spanish Federation, in a live video on Instagram.
For his part, Rubiales answered his behavior with Hermoso during his appearance on “Radio Marca”, saying: “The kiss is for Jenny? There are many idiots. When two people have an emotional moment without importance, we cannot listen to foolishness. We are heroes and I stay with that.”
However, Alberto Ortega of Spanish newspaper El Confidencial posted on X that “Rubiales taking the trophy from the players to give it to Queen Letizia and kissing Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth is disgusting”.
Hermoso wasn’t the only Spanish player to be kissed by Rubiales in the post-match ceremonies. After other members of the Spanish team collected their medals, the video shows Rubiales kissing the players on the cheeks as well as holding each other on the arm.
