Controversy Surrounds SAG AFTRA Agreement with Replica Studios for AI Voice Usage

But several prominent voice actors believe that they did not approve of the move.

The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG AFTRA) is an American trade union that, among other things, represents voice actors. A couple of days ago announced that they have entered into an agreement with AI voice company Replica Studios to allow them to provide AI-generated versions of actual voice actors’ voices for use in games and other interactive media.

This may only be done with the respective voice actor’s approval and for compensation. In the statement, they say the settlement has been “approved by affected members of the Voice Actors Guild,” but on Twitter/X, many voice actors have reacted to the news with surprise.

Erika Ishii (Apex Legends, Modern Warfare III, Halo Infinite mm) wonders, for example, if some of these “affected members” were active voice actors, but then admits that she may have overreacted, since the settlement only applies to one company.

Nor does the eminent Steve Blum (God of War, Diablo III, Mortal Kombat mm) claims to know someone who has been asked, and Xander Mobus (Persona 5, Fortnite, Lost Judgment etc.) believe that the union’s mission is to ensure that the voice actors continue to get jobs, not to license out their talent.
