Sep 04, 2023 at 05:54 Update: 37 minutes ago

The screening of films by directors Roman Polanski and Woody Allen at the Venice Film Festival can count on some resistance. Protest texts surfaced near the film festival. Various texts refer directly to the controversial directors.

Several banners written in Italian, French and English accuse the film festival of providing a stage for “rapists”. For example, the text “Does the Golden Lion go to a rapist?” to read, write The Hollywood Reporter. This refers to the most important prize at the film festival.

Polanski has previously been convicted of having sex with a 13-year-old girl and has been accused of sexual misconduct by several women. His movie The Palace was screened in Venice, although the ninety-year-old director himself was not present.

Allen is accused of abuse by his daughter. His movie Stroke of luck will premiere at the film festival on Monday. Allen is expected to attend.

Incidentally, the films of the controversial directors have no chance of winning a Golden Lion. Both films are running outside the competition. The texts may also refer to the French director Luc Besson, who was previously accused of rape. His movie Dogman participates in the competition of the film festival.
