Controversy Surrounds Maurice Steijn’s Alleged Dancing in Ibiza: Ajax Coach in Hot Water

Van Hanegem heard from Ajax player that Maurice Steijn was dancing in Ibiza

Willem van Hanegem heard from an Ajax fan that Maurice Steijn spent time in Ibiza during the recent international match. The legendary (former) Feyenoord player said this in the Willem & Wessel Podcast of Algemeen Dagblad. Steijn’s alleged presence on the island is causing a stir, as Ajax is in a particularly bad position in the Eredivisie.

“I drove to Salem this week (a friend of Van Hanegem, ed.) and a very nice guy came in,” Van Hanegem begins his story. “He was completely infatuated with Ajax. He said: ‘Stop for a moment! I was in Ibiza last week. And who do I see dancing? The Ajax coach. And you know what I said? You have to tackle those players!’ Amsterdam in its own right.”

This week the question was whether Steijn was actually in Ibiza. The News Chef of Algemeen Dagblad and co-presenter Wessel Penning chimes in: “It has been all week about whether he is in Ibiza or not. And now it turns out: he is in Ibiza and he was also dancing. !” In any case, Steijn is now (again) in the Netherlands in preparation for the match against FC Utrecht.

Van Hanegem states that he ‘never read anywhere that he was in Ibiza’. During the previous international match, Steijn was on the Spanish island, the coach himself confirmed. “Then the Ajax players already said: ‘Go and work on the team,'” Penning continues. “He has a house there. I then think: I’ll give that man his holiday, but it’s not smart. And I wouldn’t go dancing either.”

Moreover, Van Hanegem thinks that Steijn will not be Ajax’s trainer for much longer. The coach from The Hague is in an extremely disappointing sixteenth place in the Eredivisie. “I don’t think he will still be Ajax’s coach in a few weeks,” says De Kromme. “It is really talked about on television every day. Then people keep asking: ‘When is he leaving?'”

By the way, Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf recently spoke up for Steijn. The journalist, who knows that Steijn has a house in Ibiza, believes that the trainer’s presence on the island is being made too big. “Who tells me that he is not studying images of FC Utrecht every evening?” Verweij said in the Kick-off podcast. “I think that too much of a point is being made of it. He has been working with Ajax 24 hours a day for the past 3 months. He has had to deal with one setback after another. Maybe it would also be nice to take a moment to to get a breath of fresh air in Ibiza.”

‘Ibizagate’ is also discussed during the most recent episode of Kick-off. “I thought it was typical that Steijn went to Ibiza in the previous international match and Arne Slot also happened to go to it,” says Valentijn Driessen. “And they also happened to be on the same plane from Eindhoven. But Slot came back and was questioned by ESPN: ‘Did you have a nice holiday?’ And Steijn was blamed for having been to Ibiza. He would have been better off staying in Amsterdam.”

“If you leave everything in good condition in Amsterdam, that’s what it’s all about,” Driessen continues. “That everyone who has not been selected for the Dutch national team can simply complete their training hours. And that there is just care and the like. Someone other than Maurice Steijn can also do that. And perhaps it is also good that you can turn your head every now and then.” clears it up a bit.”

Ajax will take on the local FC in Utrecht on Sunday. The match between Utrecht and Ajax is a match between the surprising numbers eighteen and sixteen of the Eredivisie. With a defeat against Utrecht and a victory for FC Volendam – away against RKC Waalwijk – Ajax ends the weekend at the bottom. By the way, the Amsterdam team has played the least number of matches in the Eredivisie to date: six. Most teams have now completed eight matches.
