Controversy Surrounding Unpaid Winnings and Bookmaking Practices

Four Dutch players placed a series of bets in shops with a betting stand in early August 2022. Most bets placed bets on the victory of the Danish first league club HB Koge in a cup match against a weaker second league club. The bookmaker Toto promised a payout of up to seven times the amount of money wagered, the NOS portal reported.

Koge won, but Toto refused to pay out most of the almost 26,000 euros the players have in their bet slip.

According to the bookmaker, the seven times the bet odds were an obvious mistake. Koge plays in a higher league, so the winnings should be much lower. It added that players tried to exploit this bug because they knew it was “too good to be true.”

Disputed winnings on the ticket. “You can’t win with bookmakers”

The players took the disputed winnings to court. They hope that the verdict will be in their favor. They hope that the court will pay attention to the arbitrariness of gambling companies.

– You simply can’t win with bookmakers – one of the football bettors told Cupido van den Berg.

The men said that the bookmaker Toto had previously blocked their online accounts without giving a reason.

A spokesman for the Gambling Regulatory Authority said existing laws and regulations do not prohibit companies from limiting or excluding players’ winning bets.

Since the Netherlands legalized online gambling, the vast majority of accounts have been losing money. They amount to an average of 310 euros per month per player. As added, a small number of players win, sometimes taking advantage of the mistakes of gambling companies.
