Controversy Surrounding the Lebanese Film “Barbie” and Its Potential Censorship

“Lebanese Debate”

The committee in charge of censoring cinema films, which includes representatives of Public Security and the Ministry of Economy, has finished evaluating the movie “Barbie”, which sparked controversy over its references to religious constants and was accused of promoting homosexuality.

It is expected, according to sources in the General Security, to receive the report of the censorship committee today, to determine the possibility of showing it or withholding it from cinemas.

Informed sources told the “Lebanon Debate” that the committee had recommended showing the film, as it did not find any scene or justification for not showing it.

Concerning this possibility, the Minister of Culture clarified, in contact with the “Lebanon Debate”, that the issue for him is not a personal matter, but rather a matter of principle, and confirmed that his request not to show the film because it harms the institution of marriage and encourages perversion.

He pointed out that the most dangerous thing in the film is promoting the idea that a man can become a mother, and that a man’s mother is better than a woman’s mother.

He believed that introducing these concepts into children’s thoughts and awareness is a very dangerous matter.

But the minister apparently did his best, so he concludes by saying: “The Ministry of Culture has done its part, and let each one do his part.”
