Medicines are not always as effective as they promise, and today it is discovered that a common drug perhaps “does not cure”.
drugs often save lives, and there is no doubt about this. It is also true, however, that even pharmaceutical companies are not free from the allure of marketing and over the years they have greatly expanded their offer, to earn more money.

Taking a step back, in fact, many will remember that there were not many remedies for seasonal diseases, while now when we enter the pharmacy we have so many products to choose from that it almost feels like we are in a supermarket.
Certainly the products are effective but it does not mean that they are always as “exceptional” as they are advertised on television. Recently the Food and Drug Administration discovered a substance contained in many over-the-counter medicines that appears to have no benefit.
If you use these drugs you should probably change – here’s why
The substance/ingredient indicted by the FDA is “phenylephrine”, which is found in various products for the management of seasonal ailments. More specifically, the phenilefrina found in useful products to decongest the nasal passages, and therefore in syrups, nasal sprays or other formulations used to fight colds and/or flu. This substance is part of many formulations and has been used in America for more than 20 years, but also in Europe and Italy there are many drugs that contain it.

The FDA has conducted many studies on phenylephrine, which until now it was classified as “safe and effective”, but recently there was a review which was followed by another opinion. It seems that the substance “administered orally is not effective at any dosage that can be developed“, e so, to put it simply, it is practically useless.
This does not, of course, mean that it is dangerous or unsafe, and it is not known at this time whether phenylephrine will be removed from the ingredients list of products or banned. What is certain is that consumers, knowing that it is ineffective, will turn to other medicines to relieve cold symptoms. And pharmaceutical companies will also probably invent alternative products.
To understand which drugs contain the substance in Italy, just look at the labels, but in general there are some very well-known products, such as “Fenilefrina Aguettant”, “Kofidec”, “Nasomixin”, “Onidra” and “Tachifludec” which certainly we will look differently when we go to the pharmacy.
