The costs generated by the Strasbourg Christmas tree, revealed in “Capital”, disturb Internet users. M6 screen capture
M6 immersed viewers in the magic of Christmas. This Sunday, December 17, the new issue of “Capital”, presented by Julien Courbet, focused on “The secrets of the largest Christmas market in France”, namely that of Strasbourg. Every winter, this city decides to impress its inhabitants, but not only that. Strasbourg is the Christmas city par excellence. Tourists from all over the world travel during the festive period to discover the 12 Christmas markets that cover the town. This long-awaited event has been held since 1570 in Alsace, and it has long been the only one in France. It begins each year on the first Saturday of the Before and ends on the evening of December 24. For more than a month, the people of Strasbourg lived to the rhythm of this madness. And it must be said that there is something for everyone.

As the “Capital” teams explained, this Christmas market is really the flagship asset of this city, since it is the largest in France. And places in chalets are expensive. It must be said that more than three million visitors come each year, enough to put stars in the eyes of artisans. Obviously, the economic benefits are considerable. The 700 traders who have the privilege of exhibiting at the Strasbourg Christmas market generate between 30% and 40% of their annual turnover there. An event that they don’t want to miss for anything in the world.
A tree that sparks debate
This market is a dream for young and old, particularly thanks to its immense tree and its spectacular decorations, which are a real eye-catcher. It is also the lighting of this gigantic Christmas tree which marks the start of the festivities. And at the start of this new issue of “Capital”, viewers discovered how this emblematic tree had been selected by the city and the National Forestry Office. Without much surprise, it was chosen directly from the national forest of Bousson, in the commune of Saint-Sauveur, then it was cut down to illuminate Place Kléber. This tree, 70 years old and 28.72 meters high, is certainly an eye-catcher for visitors, but Internet users have regretted its outcome.

“Cutting down 60-year-old trees, while society talks about ecology…”
Indeed, subscribers to X, the old Twitter, deplored the fact that a tree over 70 years old was cut down, just to decorate a place for two months. For them, the ecological impact is great, but that’s not all. All the costs incurred to bring it back to Place Kléber in Strasbourg, to install it or even to illuminate it every evening, cost more than 350,000 euros. A price considered “indecent” by many subscribers of the social network, at a time when “France is doing badly”.
The price of the Place Kleber tree is staggering anyway 😳 #Capital

350k euros for a Christmas tree is indecent while people are starving #capital

Cutting down 60 year old trees, while society talks about ecology, nature etc. But apparently that doesn’t bother anyone 😅 #Capital

Why cut down this tree? No interest. It’s worthless but it captures CO2, that’s its job. #Capital

The budget allocated for the Strasbourg Christmas market, are we talking about it or not? 👀 #Capital

We can be moved that a 60-year-old fir tree is sacrificed for the Strasbourg Christmas market, but there is something even darker: under the statue of Kléber, on the square of the same name which hosts the famous fir tree, finds… the remains of Kléber since 1838!🎄#Capital

Yes yes I am aware but still the budget is crazy while France is in bad shape 🤦🏽♀️
