Kochi: On Thursday, the High Court rejected the request to stop the release of the film ‘Thankamani’, which was filmed on the theme of the 1986 bus blockade in Idukki Thangamani and the subsequent police violence. V.R., a native of Thangamani, pointed out that the film contains scenes that are not related to the real incident and that the screening should be stopped. Justice Devan Ramachandran rejected the interim requirement in Viju’s petition. The film is releasing in 33 countries. The plea to ban the exhibition will be considered again on Thursday.
The plea points out that the film shows that the men hide in the farms fearing the police and then the police rape the women, which is untrue and portrays the incident in a bad light. The petition claims that there is no official record or proof that such an incident took place and it is a work of fiction.
The court had earlier directed to produce the minutes in case the Censor Board gave permission to the film. The High Court had already disposed of the petition questioning the film. However, after the Censor Board issued a certificate to the film, a new petition was filed to block the release. Last day, the plea was heard on secrecy.
