In ‘Not to be small’, Paul de Leeuw followed five teenagers with cancer for the Dutch channel BNNVara, which is part of the NPO. At the beginning of the shooting period there was a heated disagreement about the approach to the program. According to a response from the channel, de Leeuw “raised his voice and expressed his dissatisfaction towards the director in a way that is not appropriate within a work situation.” The presenter apologized the next day, BNNVara believes.
However, the unnamed director decided to withdraw from the filming location after the altercation, according to ‘AD’. She no longer wanted to work with de Leeuw because she felt intimidated and therefore continued working on the program from the editing room. Paul de Leeuw has not yet responded to the incident.
Inappropriate behavior in the working environment is today the topic at the Dutch Public Broadcasting. The ball started rolling due to a study that the van Rijn committee conducted into the work culture at the NPO. Due to conclusions from that report, ‘The world keeps turning’ presenter Matthijs van Nieuwkerk will no longer be seen on the RTL channel for the time being. In addition, former presenter Mart Smeets (77) has apologized for comments he made about transgressive behavior in the media, and Remco van Leen (56) is temporarily withdrawing as Video Director at the broadcaster due to a report of possible transgressive behavior.
