Not far from the entrance to the Palm Springs Art Museum in California, stands a giant statue of the iconic movie star Marilyn Monroe.
The 7.5 meter high work shows Monroe in by far her most famous scene from the movie “The Seven-Year Itch”, where her skirt is blown up. But not everyone appreciates the sculpture.
An action group has taken legal action to have the statue removed. They call the statue a “sexist abomination” and believe it stands in the way of traffic in the area.

Now another work of art has set fire to the residents of the city of Palm Springs.
AIDS Memorial
This time it concerns a limestone sculpture that is intended to be set up in one of the city’s parks.
For eight years, the Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Task Force has worked with sculptor Phillip K. Smith III. The aim has been to create a memorial to honor the lives lost to HIV and AIDS.

The sculpture is planned to be set up in a separate memorial grove in Downtown Park.
– The opening in the middle is placed at eye level. It facilitates transparency, which gives the feeling of hope and a view beyond what is right in front of you, Smith explained in a previous interview with the local TV station KESQ-TV.
But in recent days, the memorial has come under heavy attack. This is reported, among other things, by the local newspaper The Palm Springs Post.
Horror seizure: – Idiot
Ridiculed
– The proposed memorial looks like a graphic depiction of the back of a person, says Gene Brake, local resident and founder of the Jose Sarria Foundation, to KESQ-TV.
The images of the planned sculpture quickly went viral on social media. It has been mocked on far-right websites and accounts. And many critics were much more direct in their “analysis”.
– The AIDS memorial looks like an ass hole, X/Twitter user @BrandonDonkey2 wrote.
Another of the residents that KESQ-TV has spoken to points out that the sculpture has been made a laughing stock.
– Because it looks the way it does, it has become a joke. And that’s the last thing we want, says Clay Sales.

Taking action
Now the Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Task Force has come out and commented on the violent reactions.
– We have listened to the concerns. A revised design is being worked on, they write in one public statement.

According to the plan, a new design will be presented on 18 October, it says.
The final memorial will also include an educational component on HIV prevention, diagnosis and treatment options.
