Controversy Surrounding New Disney Movies: Criticism over Hugh Grant as Oompa Loompa in Wonka and the “Politically Correct” Casting of Snow White

Again there is controversy surrounding new Disney movies. Hught Grant as Oompa Loompa in Wonka can count on criticism from fellow actors because of his length. And the fact that only one person of the ‘seven dwarfs’ has a short stature with Snow White also causes frowns.

When a new Disney movie comes out, there is a hassle. That now seems to be a given. Whether it is Pocahontas that is too Western, the place in China where Mulan was filmed or the skin color of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, criticism always follows.

For example, actors Brad Williams and Dylan Postl are not happy that Hugh Grant has been cast as Oompa Loompa in the film Wonka. Oompa Loompas are little people in the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, known in the Netherlands as Sjakie en de Chocolate Factory. “There are small actors who dream of being in a big production like this Disney remake,” Postl said. “These roles were made for people of my stature and now they are being taken from us? That doesn’t feel right.”

Williams also does not appreciate the choice, the actor said on Twitter. ‘Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa? I don’t know what to think about that. Part of me is like, “Hey, we’re more than just elves, leprechauns, and Oompa Loompas,” but then this comes out and I want to scream, “How dare they not cast a little human as the Oompa Loompa!” #NotMyWonka.”

‘Politically correct’

The remake of the classic Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was also criticized this week. On images of the recordings in Bedfordshire, England, seven people walked in a field, one of whom was short. The accusation is that the film is so “politically correct” that the seven dwarfs are reintroduced, but now as “magical creatures” of all shapes and sizes.

Earlier there was fierce criticism from actor Peter Dinklage, known for his role as Tyrion Lannister in the HBO series Game of Thrones. The actor himself has dwarfism and thinks that the story is no longer up to date. “I was a bit surprised when they proudly said they were casting a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Dinklage said. “You’re progressive in a way, but you’re still making that goddamn old-fashioned story about seven dwarfs living together in a cave. What the hell are you doing, man?”

Disney took the criticism to heart. “To avoid reinforcing the stereotypes of the original animated film, we are treating these seven characters differently and have consulted with people with dwarfism,” the company said. In the meantime, it seems that a mix of all lengths, widths, skin colors and genders has been chosen.
