The recent announcement issued by Netflix regarding its new Saudi comedy series “Jaybat Al-Eid” sparked widespread controversy among the Saudi audience.
The hashtag “Prevent work that is offensive to Saudis” spread on the X platform, and many tweeters refused to show the series because of its content.
The series “Jaybat Al-Eid” deals with a love story between a Saudi girl and a Pakistani young man, where she finds herself confronting her family to marry this young man.
Many users of this hashtag considered that the series misrepresents Saudi girls and shows them in an inappropriate manner, and that it does not represent Saudi society correctly.
However, Netflix provided more details about the series, which consists of 4 episodes and takes place in the city of Jeddah during Eid al-Fitr.
The story follows the character Razan, a Saudi woman living in the United Kingdom who returns to Jeddah with her teenage daughter to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
During this visit, her family discovers her secret relationship with her British fiancé of Pakistani origin, which leads to a series of comedic and dramatic events.
The series is written by Noura Abu Shosha and Ali Al-Attas and directed by Saeed Zaga, and includes a cast that includes Samar Shasha, Hamza Haqq, Yasser Al-Saqqaf, Khaled Al-Harbi, Amani Idris and Bateel Nabil.
