Controversy Surrounding Min Kyung-woo’s Comments on the Elderly: People Power Party Emergence Committee Nominee Apologizes for Disparaging Remarks

While Han Dong-hoon, Chairman of the People Power Party’s Emergency Response Committee, nominated eight emergency committee members, it was pointed out that one of them, Min Kyung-woo, standing representative of the Alternative Solidarity, recently made remarks that ‘denigrated the elderly.’

A talk concert titled ‘Questioning the idols and reason of our time’ was posted on a conservative YouTube channel last October.

Representative Min, who appeared here, argued that a new generation must emerge to overcome idols, and that for this to happen, the elderly must quickly disappear.

“The biggest tragedy right now is that older people are living too long. You must return quickly. sorry. So, if I were to conclude, I think that people who believe in idols are more likely than you think, and this is a field of psychology rather than politics. Second, how are you going to solve this? As the new generation comes up, it may have been an extreme expression, but they should naturally push out their predecessors.”

Representative Min, 58 years old, is a conservative figure who came from the student activist group and participated in the unification movement for a long time, but has since advocated for the end of activist politics.

He said, “People who believe in idols have deeper beliefs than you think,” and made a disparaging remark about the elderly while talking about the difficulty of communication between the younger and older generations.

When the remark became known, Representative Min immediately lowered his stance.

CEO Min Kyeong-woo said, “It was a mistake made in the process of emphasizing the social role of the younger generation, and I immediately announced the purpose of my apology on air.” He added, “I have no intention of belittling the elderly, and I sincerely apologize once again for my careless expression.” ″He said.

The People Power Party also explained in a notice, “This is an expression used by nominee Min Kyung-woo to emphasize it in the process of criticizing the social phenomenon of the 386 generation blocking the entry of the younger generation due to age and status.”

At the same time, he added, “I express regret that some media outlets distorted the entire purpose and made a definitive report to the effect of belittling the elderly, while deleting the statement of apology immediately following the statement.”

Professor Kim Eun-kyung, who previously served as the head of the Democratic Party of Korea’s Innovation Committee, was criticized for denigrating the elderly after introducing her son’s remark at a public event last July, asking, “Why do people with a short future exercise one vote per person equally?”

At that time, Professor Kim visited the Korean Senior Citizens’ Association and apologized in person, and the President of the Korean Senior Citizens’ Association, Kim Ho-il, even slapped Professor Kim’s photo with the palm of his hand.
