Klinsmann (59 years old) approached Welsh national team captain Aaron Ramsey after the friendly international match between South Korea and Wales (0-0) last Thursday in Cardiff and asked him for his shirt.
The former captain and coach of the German national team later confirmed to the British media that his son Jonathan, the 26-year-old American goalkeeper of the Los Angeles Galaxy, was the one who wanted to receive Ramsey’s shirt.
“This is an initiative for the physiotherapist for my son’s team in Los Angeles,” Klinsmann said upon his arrival in South Korea on Thursday evening.
He expressed his dissatisfaction, saying, “I honestly do not understand (this controversy) because my son received critical comments on his Instagram account, which is absolute stupidity.”
Despite his victory over Saudi Arabia (1-0) on Tuesday in Newcastle, his first in six matches at the helm of the South Korean national team, Klinsmann has faced difficulties in convincing the fans and the pessimistic local media since his appointment last February.
In addition to the disappointing results, Klinsmann was also criticized for not leaving his residence in California to travel to South Korea.
While he was supposed to stay in Europe this weekend to watch South Korean professional players on the Old Continent, Klinsmann eventually decided to attend two South Korean league matches. When asked about the reasons for this change of opinion, the former Bayern Munich striker responded annoyed to reporters: “Because you asked for it!”
He stressed that before the Asian Cup scheduled to be held in Qatar next January, “it is necessary for everyone to have a positive spirit. The fans, the media, and the team, of course.”
Klinsmann stressed: “If things do not go well, there will be enough time for you to criticize, fire the coach, or do whatever you want.”
